NSW Innovation Strategy

The purpose of the strategy was to create a framework that will boost innovation in NSW, to become better equipped to tackle complex economic, environmental and social challenges, stimulate economic activity and drive shared prosperity for the people of NSW.

The Strategy introduced government’s key initiatives under four themes:

A Home for Entrepreneurs

From that Strategy, here's what we've achieved:

  • Established the NSW Innovation Concierge – helping innovators and entrepreneurs access Government
  • Innovation Launch to help innovators collaborate with government to solve specific problems
  • Regulatory Sandboxes to improve the competitiveness of doing business in NSW
  • Trialling the Digital Drivers Licence

  • NSW Data Analytics Centre generating insights into some of the most complex issues Government is trying to solve
  • Invested $190m in Jobs for NSW to create employment opportunities
  • Sydney Start-up Hub – helping to connect industry, start-ups and government
  • NSW Future Skills – preparing students for a changing world through identifying opportunities to increase participation in STEM subjects and supporting students studying Asian languages
  • Generation STEM - a 10-year initiative to deliver programs that attract more diverse, high potential high school students into NSW-based STEM educational pathways
  • Boosting Business Tech Voucher Scheme - $18 million investment to give small businesses and start-ups access to high tech equipment and technical expertise in research
  • NSW Innovation Observatory Trial - a self-service platform that allows start-up professionals to access the information they need to develop and grow their start up from ideation to expansion.

  • Future Economy Breakfast series - exploring the latest industry trends and emerging technologies through connecting entrepreneurs, industry professionals, investors and innovators across the start-up, business and public sectors
  • Pitch to Pilot – An avenue for start-ups to pitch their product to key government decision makers
  • ANSTO Nuclear Science and Technology Hub – $12.5m in funding towards ANSTO’s Innovation Precinct. It will bring together local and global scientists, students, start-ups and industries. It will also include the first nuclear science and technology incubator in the world
  • NSW Digital Twin – A visual model that government, developers and residents can use to plan, develop, assess and manage infrastructure, public spaces, homes, and community facilities
  • 2019 State Digital Strategy – Future vision for ICT in NSW and a 10-year investment strategy. Due for release early 2020
  • Internet of Things Policy – Whole of government policy designed to guide investment in IoT tech and practice ‘how-to’ guide to support projects
  • AI Strategy, User Framework and Summit – guiding NSW Government investment and advice on AI projects
  • Digital Restart Fund – Accelerate whole of government digital transformation and to guide investment in digital transformation
  • Digital Driver Licence – digital version of the NSW Driver Licence available through the Service NSW app
  • Spark Festival – Sponsored by NSW Government, this two-week festival brings together people working in the start-up sector
  • CEBIT Australia – A tech conference running from 29-31 October
  • Annual Ag Tech Innovation Gateway – A one-day event offering agricultural technology start-ups and entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their products as well as supporting the adoption of new products developed by NSW Government’s agricultural researchers
  • DPI AgTech The GATE – a collaborative research and tech facility designed to develop agricultural tech ideas
  • Western Sydney Aerotropolis – An innovative hub delivering new jobs, homes, infrastructure and services in the heart of Western Sydney
  • Western Sydney Co-Working Startup Hub – Providing subsidised and affordable work spaces and programs for businesses and start-ups
  • Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct – A world-class precinct that will capitalise on the inland rail and focus on advanced manufacturing, agribusiness, and freight and logistics
  • Parkes Special Activation Precinct – A precinct that will create new jobs in freight and logistics industries and optimise opportunities in the agricultural industry.
  • Sydney Innovation and Technology Precinct – A place where world-class universities, start-ups, tech giants and the community can collaborate to solve problems, socialise and spark ideas that change our world
  • Minimum Viable Product Grants – Designed to support promising start-ups with the funds they need to progress from a proof of concept to MVP stage
  • Research Attraction and Acceleration Program (RAAP) – Funding to support innovation and investment in the State’s research and development capacity. In 2019/2020, the RAAP will fund initiatives supporting new technologies, strategies, awards recognising excellence, and events promoting research and development.
  • Innovation and Productivity Council – Advises the NSW Government on priorities for innovation-led economic development and productivity
  • M4 Smart Motorway – Introducing intelligent technology to the M4 to create the first smart motorway of its kind in NSW
  • Digital Parking and Clearways Signage and Intelligent Traffic Light Program – As part of a $695m congestion busting measure, $95m has been set aside for a digital parking and clearway signage trial
  • Infrastructure Data Management Framework (IDMF) – provides an infrastructure specific standards-based approach for NSW Government to implement better information and data practices and governance of infrastructure assets.
